“The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows.”

Harris

One may say that for somebody to turn a mirror into a window, one would need a unique set of tools. Through analyzing and discussing theories and concepts that effective modern-day teaching is predicated on and incorporating them into our work, we have attempted to create such tools to assist educators in the process of cultivating meaningful reflection and participation in students to optimize their chances of taking opportunities to improve their metacognitive abilities and critical thinking skills. For our project, we implemented insights from several theoretical perspectives to a unit plan tailored for an eleventh-grade the U.S. Government class, consisting of EL, SPED, and general population students. We center the lesson plans around the supreme court decisions, the decision-making power of the various branches of government and foster critical thinking and metacognitive skills in multiple ways, both directly and indirectly through our formal and informal curriculum.
